IPL Q&A

What is intense-pulsed light (IPL) therapy?

IPL treatments use light energy to improve your skin’s tone and texture. It offers the restored, younger-looking appearance you long for and deserve without invasive treatments, pain, or downtime. IPL therapy is safe and highly effective, offering long-lasting anti-aging results.

Which conditions can IPL treatment address?

IPL therapy at Meriden MedSpa treats the following skin concerns:

  • Sun spots
  • Visible spider veins
  • Rosacea
  • Melasma
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Port-wine stains
  • Freckles
  • Age spots

IPL can treat tissues on your face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas affected by hormonal changes, vascular conditions, and sun damage.

How does IPL therapy work?

IPL treatment reduces skin pigmentation problems by using light energy to heat and destroy pigmented cells. While the treated lesions may appear darker for several weeks after treatment, they break down or flake off over time. Light energy also heats diseased blood vessels, causing them to collapse and eventually get absorbed by your body.

How should I prepare for IPL treatment?

Follow your provider’s instructions to get ready for IPL therapy. Your specialist may ask you to stop taking certain medications. Avoid wearing any lotion the day of the scheduled procedure, and steer clear of chemical peels, waxing, and cosmetic injections a week before your appointment. Avoid sunbathing, tanning, and using self-tanners two weeks before your session.

What happens during IPL therapy?

Before treatment, your specialist cleans the area and gives you glasses to protect your eyes. They use a device to emit pulsed light energy into pigmented tissues while you relax. You may experience a rubber band snapping sensation. The length of the treatment may be about 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the areas treated.

What should I expect afterward?

After IPL treatment sessions, the treatment area may be red or swollen for a short time. Because there’s no downtime associated with IPL therapy, you can return to work or resume other daily activities. The Meriden MedSpa team may suggest you complete 3-6 treatment sessions spaced apart over time to achieve ideal results.
